In a moment of kung fu life with my Si Fu (Master Thiago Pereira), he was talking about life, about life’s events, and used the Siu Nim Tau, so that I could understand. When I got that everything is connected, but we must know how to make the connections, and we have to understand the pointss to connect to each other, forming the whole.
The same day after this conversation, it was the day I practiced and refined my Siu Nim Tau the most. I focused on each part, and every connection until I finished it. And I remembered when he also told me about being present in everything that is done. And Siu Nim Tau tells us that. I felt this through all my practice. If my mind disconnected from there, it wouldn’t flow anymore. The sequence was lost, and to connect again I would have to start over, there would be no way to follow up on something that was totally lost.
Certa vez Si Fu disse que Si Gung (Mestre Sênior Julio Camacho) e Si Taai Gung (Grão Mestre Leo Imamura) passaram horas fazendo o Siu Nim Tau.
- Ajuda a tentar encontrar respostas
- Manter-se equilibrado diante das situações da vida
Si Fu once said that Si Gung (Senior Master Julio Camacho) and Si Taai Gung (Grand Master Leo Imamura) spent hours doing the Siu Nim Tau. I was wondering why staying immersed in your own Siu Nim Tau for hours long. I confess that I still seek answers to this. I was very curious. But trying to understand came a few possibilities (a little initial idea). Practicing for a long time helps:
1. To find balance, center and focus;
2. To find answers;
3. To keep balanced with life situations.
As I thought of why, and in their answers, another question came to me, why so long? I have not gotten an answer yet, but I imagine there is no goal, not even a record. But a direct relationship with his own Siu Nim Tau. As if the Siu Nim Tau and the person that is doing become only one energy, like he said that the answers are within yourself and that you are just connecting with yourself. As if he (the Siu Nim Tau) said: “I am you, connect with me”.
As Si Taai Gung, when asked if there was something he would have asked, if he had told Patriarch Moy Yat and that time did not allow him, he said:
“What I have, I think, is the desire that stop asking him so much bullshit. I think maybe that was my wish. Because one of the very interesting things about Grand Master Moy Yat’s way of conveying the Ving Tsun to us was that we were able to seek our own questions, and I have often missed great opportunities to deepen certain questions by asking unnecessary things”.

But what does Siu Nim Tau (小念頭) mean?
We translate (Nim Tau 念頭) as “idea of the beginning”, but “Nim tau 念頭”, when translated as single expression, means “Intention”. So the joke in the film is that Fung Wah says that Leung Jaan asks the students to have a “Little Intention” (Siu Nim Tau 小念頭), where “small” is represented by this ideogram (小).

… the fact that Siu Nim Tau comes first, is not by accident. Among other practical issues, you only begin to really appreciate the Ving Tsun when your “intentions” with art diminish, and you simply experience it.

It seems that gradually this intention is decreasing and the concern with techniques in the first place as well. Refining his own Siu Nim Tau is the way.
